Yesterday was a decisive moment. I made a commitment to work up to an
hour a day of exercise by September 23rd, the end of summer. For accountability purposes, it always helps to publicly declare one’s commitment to a goal.
This morning, while stumbling out of bed, a set of 4 lb. green dumbbells were staring at me. My son had purchased them last night. Huge, supportive hint, right? It is time to take the mushy arms (aka relief society arms) and work them into muscles of steel.
Need you review a few of the gazillion reasons for exercise? Check out the Mayo Clinic’s top ten list.
Are you willing to set an exercise goal with me? I’ll promise to hold you accountable if you do. I’m ready to get down to business, start sweating, and make exercising fun!?!

Beautiful movie Darlene! OK, realistically you sould be only work out 6 days a week! I didn’t make that up! After all the world was created in 6 days! Not only that, my physical therapist says to take at least one day off a week! Your body, she says, needs to rest!
I’m on Darlene! I’ll workout 6 days a week with you!! We’ll be accountable to each other!!

Hi Darlene
Well, that’s a not-so-subtle hint from your son, isn’t it? Thank goodness you didn’t stub your toes or fall over them!
It is literally pouring outside as I’m typing this, however, as I said in reply to your previous post, I’ve promised myself to stop being such a wuss about walking in the cold (I won’t be walking in the rain though!) and commit myself to increasing the amount of aerobic exercise that I do. As you know, I haven’t been very well for a while, but now that I’m feeling heaps better again, I actually feel like exercising more!
I always feel fantastic after going for a walk, and yet I find myself making excuses as to why I haven’t got time for it! Silly, hey?!
Many years ago, I used to head to a gym two, sometimes three, times per week after work.
By the time I’d done my hour long workout, I was so pumped and full of energy, that I would power walk to the car! I would be on such a high from it that I would then sing in the car on the way home!
Now and then I would think about how embarrassing it would be if someone had bugged my car and was listening in! Can you imagine?! hehe
You’ve already made a great start to your new exercise regime by sharing your intentions with us. I can’t wait to see how you progress with it but just remember to be kind to yourself too.
I’m sure everyone here would agree with me that we’re behind you 100%.
I find that exercising with a friend keeps us both more motivated and accountable. If only we lived closer to one another, Darlene, we could exercise together (and chat throughout, no doubt!).

Hi Darlene,
Thanks for sharing your video with us. As I type this I’m lying in my bed, working on my laptop and moving my legs around convinced that it’s exercise!!
I’m not very good at committing to things but I am going to try and commit to getting out and taking a walk at least 3 times a week.
Truly wish you well with your daily exercise and I’ll check back in and see how you are getting on!

Great Darlene, good luck with the new challenge. I go running 3 times per week but I’d also like to get back into doing some weights and going to the gym. I used to love it.
Keep us informed as to how you do with this!
I am rooting for you to support you
Thanks

Hi Darlene,
I think it’s great that you’ve set yourself an exercise goal. The 23rd September happens to be my birthday so I hope we’ll both have something to celebrate!
I’m right there with you though. I’m currently 1 event completed in 5 diffferent running challenges of varying degrees of stupidity that I set for myself.
I found your goal setting very inspirational and I wish you well. I’ll check in from time to time to hear about your progress.
Regards,
Andrew

Darlene,
You are so brave to make a public commitment like this one. I know you can do it! But pace yourself so your body can adjust and not cause you great pain in the process.
What’s the significance of Sept 23 to you? For Dave and I, that’s our anniversary and yes I’d love to be more fit for that date.
Thanks for the inspiration to keep using my yellow dumbbells!
Enjoy the success you’ll experience on the journey to your goal!

Hi Darlene,
Fantastic goal! Sign me up…I’ll join you in the accountability as I might need some as I’ve taken July/Aug off from working out with my trainer ~ way too easy for me to make excuses & with no one holding me accountable right now, I feel like such a slacker! LOL!

I truly admire you going public with this commitment Darlene. Accountability is a great motivator and it seems you have a few brave souls willing to commit along with you! Good luck to you all and I’ll be watching your progress with interest. Looking forward to an update. Louise

I’m on. I did an hour last night on the treadmill. I need some accountability, so I’ll do it with you. Thanks for the beautiful weekend and I’m looking forward to having an exercise partner. Let’s see what we can do by Sept. 23.

Hey Darlene~ How’s the exercising going? I’m finishing my walking update for July 1st – recommiting to exercising! I made it sound so good when I committed with you the other day, in reality, 20 min on a stationary bike and 30 modified pushups is no big deal~ I need to be doing more…

I am guilty of all of these! I used to think I did not procrastinate, that was the ultimate denial!
Recently I have been consciously aiming to do the most important things first.
Great post, thanks for putting it so clearly.
