We’ve arrived at a time when your own barcode is available with a minimal amount of effort and at no cost to you!
All you need is a smart phone, and an application on it to recognize the code and do your typing for you. It’s that simple. With a point and click, that barcode information will be instantly downloaded to the contacts on your phone.
Here, try it on mine. Go to the box in the upper right hand corner, open the application on your phone and click it.
This barcode can be resized to fit on business cards, coffee mugs, billboard signs, T-shirts, and whatever else your imagination can conjure up.
The following easy steps will assist you in developing your own QR code:
1. Go to goqr.me/ and create your own Vcard. Enter as much of your information as you want your business contacts to have. There maybe limits on the amount of information you can include for older cell phones.
2. Save your QR Code to your computer.
3. Copy the URL to imbed in documents, and the HTML code to add to your website. These codes are available at the bottom of the page once you complete your Vcard information.
4. On your iphone or Android, download the application (QR Droid for Android). This will take all of 30 seconds, honest!
5. Return to the application on your phone, tap it, and before you can center the phone over the bar code, all of the information will become available on your phone. It merely needs to be saved. It will then show in your contact list.
Fun, isn’t it?
Let me know if you’ve found a new way to use your own QR code. The advertising possibilities are limitless. Once you start using this code you will see it on a lot of different advertising media. It’s like buying a Honda? You suddenly see all kinds of Honda’s on the road, right?
Explore endless possibilities with this one!

Darlene,
I don’t understand what is the purpose of having a bar code. What does it do? I know it is necessary for books and CD’s to be published and sold. Please explain why I would want to create my own bar code.

Dr. Erica, We are in the age of widgets and gadgets. Think of putting your barcode on your business card, or including your Twitter account in the barcode information. These codes make you much more accessible.

This is cool Darlene! I’ve seen these codes on various websites, but didn’t really know what they were until reading this post. You have given simple, easy to follow instructions that make the process quick and painless.
Thanks,
Wendy

Darlene,
I have been using the barcode feature for quite some time on my Blackberry as a way to add contacts.
It is another form of tracking and some question it as an invasion of privacy.
I think it is a great way to have all your eggs in one basket and especially as online marketers, it’s an advantage that we know more about this subject now, than later.
Thanks for sharing!

Tommy,
Happy to know that you’re using it on your Blackberry. What application did you use to set it up on your phone? Yes, the invasion of privacy is a factor, but as online marketers we share all our contact info already, right?
March 7th, 2011 at 4:58 pm
Hey Darlene,
Isn’t technology so fantastic. I can’t wait to see what we’ll be able to do in 6 months from now, or a year, five years, just think of the possibilities!
Not sure where the “invasion of privacy” comes into play? If you only enter what you want others to see then it really isn’t an invasion of privacy. Tommy mentioned that it is a form of tracking, if this is the case then yes there would be an invasion. Please let me know if I’m missing something here.
Look forward to playing around with this one.
Thanks for sharing Darlene

Kevin,
The tracking comes in on an individual basis, I think; however, I’ll study it further and do a follow-up blog post on it, k?

Thank you for this information Darlene. I haven’t yet been able to download the application to my phone – technical problems arghh! – but I am looking forward to using this powerful tool sometime soon.
I was looking at some affiliate links the other day and, as well as giving the usual hyperlink, they also included a QR code! How powerful is that! QR codes are definitely here to stay.

Hi Darlene, I’d never heard of people having their own bar codes before. I thought they only had them on products at the shops. Sounds like a really easy way to give people your details.

Hi Darlene,
Thx for sharing this new technology here, which was total new to me… Exciting times are ahead of us and have something more in my marketing arsenal… With the iPhone 4 I had to print off your barcode and make a picture and then convert it within the application… probably I have to chose another application to get a better and quicker result.
Thx again for sharing this.
All the best,
Alex

QR codes seem to be everywhere these days, I think they’ve taken off in conjunction with the mobile web, so many sites now have a mobile presence and QR codes are a great way to connect traditional marketing with a company’s online presence. I think there is so much more that we could do with QR codes, instead of just putting a link in it and was picked on of other great ways to use them just haven’t thought of any yet.
March 24th, 2011 at 7:18 am
Neil, When you think of some alternative ways to use QR codes, please pass them on, k?
March 29th, 2011 at 7:26 pm
Nice post Darlene, your tutorial is very helpful.
I use QR codes with my clients and we’ve had mixed results. We’ve had the best response rate when the QR code led to a discount for the customer. This is a no brainer, but we are always trying new things to see what works.
